Saving Pictures

First, let me get this out of the way. Any pictures hosted on either my IrrationalDad site ( or on my SmugMug site ( are fully the property of Joe Gearhart (webmaster). No pictures may be used for any type of advertising, commercial use, or any other use that I cannot think of. I take countless pictures of Tyler and our family. The only way to effectively share them with my family is through my websites. The instructions on this page are strictly for those family members that wish to save a copy of a given photo to their hard drive for personal use (to print so that they can hang it in a frame, or to keep on their computer).

If you have any doubts about whether you should be taking one of these pictures, let’s just assume that you probably shouldn’t. If you have any questions, shoot me an email (

Now, on to the instructions.

Wow, you found a picture of Tyler (or something else, but that’s doubtful) that you would really like to save to your computer so that you can print it off later. Problem is, every time you save the file, you end up with a low quality picture that looks horrible when zoomed in or printed off. Allow me to explain.

When I upload a picture to my SmugMug site (, EIGHT copies of that picture are made: thumbnail, tiny, small, medium, large, XL, XXL, Original. The reason for all the different sizes is that I can post them to my blog ( and not have them take forever to load. Typically, I’ll display the medium size on my blog, and then link it to the XXL size.

I won’t add any of the larger sizes here, because they are seriously big and will mess up the display of this page. Actually, the medium picture above is bigger than I’ve displayed it, but it just won’t fit. Here’s what the picture above looks like, full size:

Anyway, when you save a file on my SmugMug site, you’re probably saving the Medium size file, which won’t even look good as a 4×6 printout. If you want all the glory that my camera has to offer, you need to save the Original size. How do I do that, you ask? It’s just as easy as saving the Medium sized file. Seriously.

Step One: Go to my SmugMug site ( and click on a gallery

Step Two: Select the photo you want to save, by clicking on its thumbnail. This will display a larger (Medium) version of it on the right

Step Three (THE IMPORTANT STEP): Hover your mouse cursor over the large picture

Step Four: Click on the button that says “Save Photo” (DO NOT RIGHT-CLICK, SAVE AS)

That’s it. It’s just that simple. If you Right Click, and choose “Save As”, you’ll only get the Medium photo. To get the original, you have to hover your mouse over the picture to get the box to pop in. With the original photo, you can print poster sized images and have them turn out great. Poster sized!!! I’m talking about 20×30 inches!

Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions.
